Team Defianz Driverless Racing
Three years building and leading autonomous systems for an open-wheel race car: perception, LiDAR detection, planning, testing, safety, sponsorship, and a 40+ member team.
Building the car—and the team
Over three years at Team Defianz, I moved from autonomous-systems development into responsibility for the full team. The engineering challenge joined perception, planning, electronics, safety, and vehicle integration; the leadership challenge joined more than 40 people behind one race-car deadline.
Autonomous stack
I worked on high-speed cone detection, localization, and classification; synthetic-data generation; LiDAR-based 3D detection with PointPillars; camera–LiDAR calibration; and BayesRace trajectory optimization. System-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop testing connected those algorithms to the physical vehicle.
Leadership and safety
As Team Manager and Autonomous Systems Officer, I supervised technical delivery, certified high-voltage and autonomous-system safety, and secured more than $5,000 in title sponsorship, including support from NXP Semiconductors.
Competition results
The team placed 8th worldwide in the 2022 Formula Student Italy Engineering Design event and 2nd in Formula Bharat FSEV’s Software and Integration Report.
